Physocarpus opulifolius
Ninebark is a shrub with attractive foliage and arching branches, named after its unique strips of peeling bark which reveal a red undertone. The small white flowers are loved by native pollinators, especially solitary mining bees, and are often covered in a diversity of species. This is one of the best plants for attracting insect diversity that we have observed at the farm. It can also be used to control erosion along streams. Choose red or green foliage.
Zone: 3-7 (Map)
Habitat: Can do well in wet to dry soils, but thrives in well-drained soil near streams and creek beds.
Growth: 10 ft tall, 7 ft wide at maturity.
