Fall ’25 Bare-Roots – Order Now

Description

Corylus spp.

Hybrid hazelnuts are typically more shrub-like than European hazelnuts. Incorporate them into a hedgerow, wildlife planting, or plant them in an orchard setting. Larval host for numerous Lepidoptera species.

Our hazelnut selection includes seedlings of complex crosses between the American (C. americana), European (C. avellana), and Asian hazel (C. heterophylla) grown from seed sourced from Grimo Nut Nursery and Z’s Nutty Ridge. They are open-pollinated and are likely to contain pollen sources from hybrid parents. Parent trees exhibit tolerance to Eastern Filbert Blight and are selected for cold-hardiness and productivity.

  • Seedling of Dermis (Grimo): Dermis was selected by Ernie Grimo–it is a productive tree with medium-sized nuts that is suitable for cooler climates and ripens in mid- to late-October in Ontario.
  • Finger Lakes Abundant (Z’s): Seeds from several of Z’s best mother trees, all of which are hardy and produce good-quality nuts. The mature mother trees show no signs of blight.
  • Northern Hazel (Grimo): Seed from a variety of named cultivars which are primarily C. heterophylla. Nuts ripen early, in August, and can be grown in zone 4a.
  • Prodigy (Z’s): Open-pollinated seed from a planting of controlled crosses from selected high-performing trees that have been further selected for quality.

Zone: 4-8 (Map)

Habitat: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun but will tolerate partial shade.

Growth: 12 ft tall, 12 ft wide at maturity.

Prohibited: CA, OR, WA
